Hanafuda Denki: A Tale of Playing Cards

RYUZANJI COMPANY • TOKYO, JAPAN
Written by Shuji Terayama
Drama with music • 75 minutes
All Ages Tickets $11 / $9

Are you a winner or a loser in this life-and-death game? Hanafuda Denki – A Tale of Playing Cards is—in its ghostly, fantastical and illusionary way—a very Japanese kind of Threepenny Opera. Written and first staged in 1967 by avant-garde pioneer Shuji Terayama, this new version by Tokyo’s internationally acclaimed Ryuzanji company brilliantly reflects the original for our times—complete with lively singing and colorful kimonos.

NOTE: an additional performance of this show has been added – Sunday September 2, 10 pm.

Henry V

KEEP IT SIMPLE THEATRE PRODUCTIONS • VICTORIA, BC
Adapted by David Chrtistopher
Shakespearean History Play • 100 minutes
All Ages • All Tickets $11

William Shakespeare’s classic tale of romance, betrayal, self-discovery, and war between the French and English has particlularly strong resonations in bilingual Canada. This melodramatic interpretation incorporates the classicism of the original with a little tongue-in-cheek Canadian stereotypification. It’s a great ol’Canadianized Shakespearean historical romp. Come and enjoy some Shakespeare with a melodramatic twist. keepitsimpleproductions.ca
